Spotted at Seaford |
Old Seafordian and scientist Josef Amin, and former Head of Biology at the school Beccy Weir, recently visited the college to talk to students about careers in science.
Beccy, now a micro and molecular biologist, said that biotech was where the next big leaps in science were coming from, and molecular biology was at the heart of it.
“As a micro and molecular biologist, I work with cells to investigate how they function, how we can control them and how we can use them,” she said. “The applications range from learning about diseases to making new products like drugs, chemical compounds or materials.”
Josef, a freelance research scientist who left Seaford in 2018, is currently writing a paper about shark behaviours following on from his dissertation. He talked about the benefits of higher education and stressed that it’s not essential to have the next 30 years mapped out.
They urged students to “go where your interests lie and network”. Don’t be afraid to make changes if what you thought you wanted does not turn out that way, both at university and when you start work, they said.
Thanks to Beccy and Josef for giving their time and expertise to help students!
