Hundreds of students, staff, parents and alumni turned out earlier this month to watch the inaugural John Green Trophy, an annual invitational fixture played against one of the country's other leading rugby teams, Northampton School for Boys.
This first match for the trophy named in honour of Seaford's Headmaster John Green, who is retiring at the end of this academic year, was played in slippery conditions on the historic Oval pitch. The Seaford 1st XV got off to a fabulous start, leading comfortably at the interval, only to be pegged back in an attritional second period and pipped at the post 17-21 with the last play of the game.
It was a match fitting of the occasion, and although the Seaford boys were disappointed to lose out, the two teams got together afterwards to celebrate a game neither will forget.
Christian Head, Director of Sport, said: “A huge thank you to Northampton School for Boys for helping to make this historic first meeting so memorable. We also pause to reflect on the man whose name will forever be associated with this occasion. Mr John Green, our Headmaster, leader, mentor, and twice Head of Rugby, whose influence on Seaford Sport will endure for generations.
This trophy is far more than silverware. It is a living tribute to a man whose life has been shaped, and defined, by the values of rugby: courage, humility, resilience, respect, and an unwavering commitment to team. These are the very qualities we seek to honour on the field and in the years to come.”
Thanks to all the spectators too who gave their raucous spport on the day, and to NextGen for livestreaming the game.
